For Animators: How long does it take to finish a movie scene/project?

I am a Job Corps student that is working so hard to become an animator! I have several questions I would love to ask that I would love to hear from animators that could give me some time of their day to give me advice. It would mean so much to me, and maybe someday I would love to work with any of you! Thank you! #design #animation #artist #career

Kim’s Answer

Look at it mathematically for a second, with these following facts:

- There are 16-frames/second in an animated film.
- A film 1.5-hours long has 5,400 seconds of film.
- At 16-frames/sec, there are 86,000 frames to produce.
- There may be five different art processes occurring in one frame for a total of 430,000 processes to create.

- Each of these processes may take 3 to 4-hrs. to produce, initially.
- Each process may have from 20 to 30-people working on one process.

- So, one process would be 60-man/hrs, multiplied five processes for 300-hrs per frame.
- So, 86,000-frames multiplied by 300-man/hrs per frame, equals 25,800,000-man/hrs of production time.

Does that help? By the way, my advice to you is not to promote book sales, it is for you to grow by reading what successful animators have already done.

Kim recommends the following next steps:

Read - The Animator’s Survival Kit / Richard Williams, Cartoon Animation / Preston Blair, & The Illusion of Life / Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston
Read each book 10 mins. a day, twice daily. No more. In a year of reading like this you'll acquire the necessary knowledge.
Practice your drawing 2-hrs a day, everyday. NEVER STOP!
Stay focused on the goal of becoming an Animator. Draw a picture of you drawing for PIXAR, put it on your locker door so you see it everyday.

Giovanni’s Answer

Totally depends on the scope of the project! And how complicated the scene is.

I know it's the not the answer you're looking for but it really varies from project to project
