How should you get started as an upcoming animator?

Are there certain things new animators should be looking out for when they begin to transfer themselves into a bigger world of art?
How would one know where to begin on their journey?

Thank you comment icon Hello Olivia, I know a few people who were self taught in animation. They first started out by looking up videos on youtube. After that they started to animate on their own. It took them a couple months until they felt okay to animate by themselves. I hope this helps! Rich

Now that it is 2019 there are many universities and online schools for animation should you decided to follow that path. You are even be able to get the animation software such as Maya, downloaded for free as a student last time I checked. https://www.autodesk.com/education/free-software/maya

This has a link to Maya...and should have a student sign up!

Networking is very important in starting your journey into animation. The entertainment industry is very small so you never know who you are going to work with or could help you land a job down the road. Always treat everyone with respect and do your best to help others.

Internships are also a great way to get your foot in the animation industry. A lot of companies offer college and after college internships. Most are unpaid but it’s a great way to grow your skills and network. I started my career as an intern and it opened the door into me becoming a full-time animator for that same company.
