Does an engineering career involving living in one community all of our life or moving to different cities/states/countries every couple of years? Why can't company CEO/MDs/Owner start sub branch companies all cities in a state ?
Why only Bangalore or Metro cities? Look at Bangalore now too much crowd on roads. can not move easily within an hours for 5KM distance (1 hours) #engineer #any

This is a question I have been having since childhood as I come from a small town.
When I moved to cities to pursue my career I realized that the reason for the same is the ease of getting competent employees for one's firm.
If a company is opened in a remote location the majority of the applicants would be the natives, as migrants always want to settle in a city where there is easy access to transport and native food/ food products available.
For example, a person from Kanpur would find it difficult to adjust to a small town of Coorg for example.
However, this has to be considered by all the entrepreneurs to have India's development spread across equally to all the towns and cities which, we are not sure if would ever be implemented.

1) Depends on the size of the company....large companies provide many different opportunities for Engineers....think of it as, instead of moving to a new company for new experiences, you change job types that use Engineering w/ the same company. 2) Movement between cities is unique to each company, and can change over time. Experience in the field and w/in the company might make it easier to negotiate not moving as much. Larger companies tend to have multiple cities with employees. 3) Sub-branches have advantages for diversity but disadvantages in building collaborative culture....again depends on the size of the company and the culture of the company....

Hi Manjunath,
It really depends on the specific engineering job. For instance, R&D jobs do not
involve travelling where as some one working on implementation side will have to
travel extensively.
So one can really plan and choose a role according to his/her preferences.
The location where the company/branch is setup would depend on many factors including
business prospects.
Kannan’s Answer
The most important criteria that companies look for is the ease of doing business. This includes a diverse and competent workforce, work infrastructure, the professional network. Internet connectivity is robust in cities and the possibility of outages is minimal. Also the ease of transportation for both domestic and international travel is very good when it comes to cities.

Good question. Even i get this thought many times, seeing the traffic and the crowd in a single city.
Answering to your first question, All the job roles doesn't require travel, depends on the role. But if you are switching to another company and if the opening is for another city/country, then you will have to do that. That too initial years of the career, we cannot be very choosy about the location if the role is good.
And about starting the branch in different places, it depends on the budget, resource and the requirement of the company. But definitely it would be very helpful in terms of population density and traffic.
All the best for your career !!

Good thought. I will answer your question(s) in two parts:
1. Does an engineering career involving living in one community all of our life or moving to different cities/states/countries every couple of years? - Well, it all depends on the nature of the job. If your job requires you to travel to different parts of the country or abroad, you will have to travel. Most of the job roles can be performed remotely but there are some roles that require you to be present physically.
2. Why can't company CEO/MDs/Owner start sub branch companies all cities in a state ? - It again depends on the size of the company, the capital they have to start a branch in a different part of the city/state. Most of the large businesses have branches all across the world.
Thank you.
