First ask yourself what colleges are you looking at?

If you're aiming for top level colleges such as Yale, NYU, Brown, Harvard, Stanford, MIT, etc. Be prepared to have a GPA of at least 4.0 (chances are you will need a higher GPA) and you will need a near perfect or even perfect( this rarely happens though!) SAT score.

If you want to get into a state school or some private schools 3.0-3.5 should be good enough and the SAT score varies depending on the school.

If you have a low GPA (2.0-2.7) don't worry you do have a 2nd chance with community college, just get good grades there and you can transfer to a four year college.

Honestly the most accurate way to find out what colleges fit you and your GPA/SAT score is to google "SAT score and GPA needed to get into ____ university." Good luck with college applications! :D

Thank you comment icon Thanks! I'll look into this more. Hamid

Collegeboard.org is a great resource for this! I poured through the pages of universities all over the U.S. when I was a senior in high school. Collegeboard was my go-to site! They put all of the information in one place and it is very easy to use. They even have various filters you can apply to see only colleges that have programs you are interested. To determine academic rigor, look at the admissions requirements, G.P.A. of past admitted applicants, SAT/ACT scores, class rank etc. This will give you an idea of what scores and grades you need to be accepted. However, don't be discouraged your application will be reviewed based on the full picture! College-board will help you get an idea of what is most important to the specific school you are applying to.

This professional recommends the following next steps:

 • Chat with your Guidance Counselor
 • Create a Collegeboard.org account
 • Start using CollegeBoard as a resource to look up schools.

Hi Hamid W. I see that you posted this question a little while ago so I hope my answer to you (or others who may read this response) is still helpful.

I see this type of question posted often. Adding a bit to the awesome answers already provided, I share that **what** you plan to study, if you already know going into college, is important as well, particularly if you plan on following a technology, engineering, math and/or science curriculum.

Hope helpful and best of luck to you!
