If you have a degree in Computer Science, what kind of jobs will you be able to get?

Will you be able to travel across the country? I have only seen a couple of movies where a person works with computer science but to be completely honest I don't know that they do, it seems as hacking is the only excitement that they get? What are the fun aspects of this major and what is the highest potential with this major? Lastly, what qualities should the ideal candidate have for this major?

People who study computer science were once stereotyped as die-hard nerds who would rather spend a Friday night writing code than grabbing a beer with friends, but in today's tech-driven economy, skilled programmers are virtual rockstars. Choosing to major in nearly any computer science major (computer science, information technology (IT), and computer information systems (CIS) definitely sets you up for a high-paying job after you graduate.

Computer science majors as a group have among the highest median salaries of any major grouping. When you look at the list of the most common jobs for Computer Science Majors and see titles like Chief Information Officer, Vice President of Engineering and Agile Coach, you can probably figure out why.

And studying computer science doesn't doom you to life as a code monkey. A high number of Business Intelligence Directors majored in computer science, proving that you can have a variety of job titles with a computer science degree.

Lots of computer science majors have gone on to have glamorous, high-profile careers. Comedian Jimmy Fallon, billionaire entrepreneur Sergey Brin, astronaut Anousheh Ansari and Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt all studied computer science.

Basically you can get a post of Vice President (VP), Engineering (Computer Software), Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Chief Information Officer (CIO), Senior Program Manager, Principal Software Engineer and many more and the pay which you get is really high as the demand has increased a lot since 2005.

Thank you comment icon Thank you so much! This was genuinely so helpful! I knew the little benefits that came with this degree, but know I now more directed paths. It really pays off to earn a degree in computer science and I can't wait to participate in this field. Adilene Jezabel

Computer Science includes many different areas of study, there is programming (writing code), there is managing the technology for a company, helping to decide which servers, storage or software the company should buy and why. Studying Computer Science teaches you about the different technology and how it works and why in some situations one technology or strategy is better than another for example should a company store it's data on servers and storage devices in it's own data center or should the company store its data in a Cloud or should only some data be stored in a Cloud. If so, which data and whose Cloud? Studying Computer Science could also lead to a career in sales, selling compute technology to different companies. You could also be the person with all the answers and provide technology help to the users. If you like computer science there are many options for jobs. You should decide what you like best about Computer Science and what you like to, solve complex problems or puzzles, talk to people, work in large groups or alone, do research, help people when they don't know what to do. That will help guide you to the right kind of job. The fun is in doing what you enjoy. As far as I know, most computer science jobs do not include a lot of travel. The computer technology salesperson probably has the most opportunity to travel. As far as traits for a person pursuing this major, I'd say you should love the technology, be well spoken and able to communicate in person and in writing. Correct spelling and good grammar are important. A person should also be able to work well with others in large groups or on large projects. I hope this helps.

Thank you comment icon Thank you Theresa, that was a very detailed answer and was very informative. I did not know that you could really choose your path within a computer science degree but now I know it really is up to my preferences. It sounds that if you have a passion for computer science you can really excel in this field! Thank you again! Adilene Jezabel

Just within the umbrella of computer science, there are so many different fields you can choose from and specialize in. Let's just say you want to become a software developer. Depending on which company you work for, the software you create could be completely different. You could do app development, potential work on creating new tools and applications, or updating and adding features to existing ones. You could end up working on internal tools that a company might use. There are also fields like computer security, working more with hardware, machine learning/AI, IT, Cloud, etc. It really is up to what you enjoy about computer science, and you get to choose what field you want to pursue.

I think that the joy of coding comes from being able to solve problems. Most of the time, when you are developing software, you are working to solve some sort of problem, whether it's an internal problem for a company, or trying to create product that solves consumer needs. Software development can be a long process, but it's so rewarding once you finish, knowing that somewhere out there, someone's life is being made easier because of something you created. I hope this helps answer some questions you have!

Hanish’s Answer

There are multiple fields within it that you can work in like Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Security Engineering, Embedded Systems Engineering, etc. If you're someone who wants to get into the tech industry quickly, I would suggest trying out for fullstack engineer roles. I would suggest focusing on data structures and algorithms and mastering at least one programming language. A lot of people start out with python or javascript because they’re easier to learn compared to an object oriented language like Java or C++. Data structures and algorithms are crucial for anyone that’s trying to learn CS concepts because once you start interviewing for jobs, most of these jobs will focus on your ability to solve problems using common data structures like linked lists, arrays, stacks, queues, etc. Try to solve questions on leetcode in different programming languages like python, javascript, java, c++, etc. Leetcode has a section of problems dedicated to just interview, from personal experience I can vouch that you can expect to get these in atleast 90% of the time.
