Know what you want to study first, check the department of the college if they have they offer that course, check past student in that area and history, check the profile of the faculty staff to see if they have the expertise you want, check the ranking of the school and reviews about the school as well...and then consider the cost and location.

Hi Zachary,

I would first find out what you can afford. Would you be receiving scholarships or grants? Typically your guidance counselor should be able to help you locate scholarships to apply for. As you will find out, out of state tuition typically costs a lot more than the state you reside in. Once you have an idea, I would do some research on various colleges, including visiting their websites. Make a list of what is important to you in a college, such as academic programs, diversity, campus life, etc. I opted for in-state college as I had plenty of people to ask and could actually go visit the campus. I was able to find a college that could accommodate my schedule, had a great reputation and ultimately saved a lot of money being I didn't live on campus. I did a state college for undergrad and a private college for grad school. The state college tuition was manageable for me as I knew my ultimate destination would be grad school. I would also check into admissions to find out what ACT score is required, acceptance rate, etc.
