Take Illustrator and Photoshop classes in high school if you can. It's important to earn an Associates of Art degree in Graphic Design, from an accredited college. Try to secure an internship your 2nd year; many times a good internship experience will lead to a full time job offer. You may decide to stay in Graphic Design or transition to Digital Media for a Bachelors degree.

As you develop your skills you might even consider gaining some real world experience by signing up as a designer at a site like 99 designs. There, you can submit work on real projects that people are looking to have done. If your design is selected, you get paid. But, the real benefit is that you get a chance to submit real design proposals and get real feedback from actual customers.
