What prerequisites are there for basic IT office administrators?

I am wondering about what knowledge and certifications are required to become, say, an office administrator or a basic help-desk technician. I already know about the Comptia 220-901 and 902 (A+) certification and am persistently studying to acquire it, but I need to know what else there is along with the side-job of basic network configuration and management. #management #office-administration #help-desk

Check the ITIL service support process to get an idea on how a structured support works within an organization.

That said, there are a few hard skills that could be handy such as knowledge of active directory, understanding of group policies and setting up new users. In our company help desk also takes care of printers, preparing new laptops and other tier 1 support.

It depends on the type of organization you want to join and their size, there are companies with clearly defined tools and rules for these type of positions and others where IT office administrator do anything from setting up printers to troubleshoot servers.

IT Office Administrator requirements will vary from different employers. Some may not require the A+ Certifications. I've seen many which require the Microsoft Specialist Certifications, or a BS in Computer Science/Information Technology. A great way to find career requirements is look for job listings in the field you are interested in. See what employers are looking for and go after it.

Good luck

I agree with Alexander. ITIL is a good place to start. In addition to how support works you'll gain a valuable vocabulary of "buzz words" that will help you speak the language of support.

There are lots of self study courses available on the web that can help even without the formal certifications. If you do want a Cert for your resume I would recommend the basic certification called ITIL Foundations.

Good luck ...
