The best advice I would give is to get as much exposure to many different aspects of our wide ranging field. There is restaurant, institutional, production, teaching, catering.... Get as much experience in many areas til you find one that you wish to excel in. I've spent over 40 years as a cook/ Chef and have no Hotel exsposure as I chose not to mainly because knowing my personality I would have loved it and stayed on for as long as possible , missing out on other chances. Saying that we never know everything in the culinary field has never been truer than todays world. Best of luck!!

Hi Jessica,
I know a couple of people who studied to be a culinary chef and attended SF culinary school. I didn't keep in touch with that person, so I don't know whether they were successful. The second person is my sister-in-law who started out as a pastry chef and had also attended culinary school. While she liked the job, it did not pay very well, so she ended switching careers. The most successful story to date is my husband's cousin who had a passion for cooking from the start. Her food is very delicious and we encouraged her to open up her own catering company. With the help of a local non profit called La Cocina, she found a commercial kitchen and now runs her own catering company and also operates a food stall in the Berkeley food court. So whether you choose the path of opening your own restaurant, food truck or catering company, the latter was the easiest to do since it didn't require a specific location with permits and licenses.
