Hi Leanne, when preparing for your major in college I would look into a few areas:
- A Laptop that is mobile enough to carry to class with a long battery life will be your best friend. Some examples may be a Macbook air or a Microsoft surface pro. Other options are available as well for a smaller price tag but keep in mind that it will need to last throughout your college years.
- If the Computer major you're referencing is technical in nature similar to computer science I would look into websites including Codeacademy and W3Schools to get an introduction of programming prior to jumping into classwork. This will ease your transition, as college courses will move quickly.
- For the art portion, if this is in reference to computer art / graphic design I would look into the basics of Photoshop and tutorials on youtube. Paying for a month of Photoshop access or working with alternative free tools online will help you understand the tools and capabilities prior to college.
Hope this helps!

Whenever starting school and you know what courses you'll be taking, try to find out in advance if you can get course syllabi and related information for them. You should be able to find out from the school administrator or program director what specific books and supplies you'll need. Doing this ensures you won't waste money on things you don't need. More generally, you can always read up on the field you are getting into. Go to the library! Go to Barnes & Noble! Look on Amazon! Do searches for related books/resources on google. The resources are out there.
