To better assist your community in the data science field you could easily just formulate a need from your own observations locally. For example, Does your community have access to books/resources to improve education? does the town currently have a need that surfaced recently during the pandemic that was not previously foreseen?
Doing the analysis of those needs your community has will be essential for the type of data science byproduct you will provide. Most companies if not the majority of people tend to go toward data visualization, data analytics, predictive modeling, or a combination of all three.

As a computer engineering student, you may be able to use your skills and knowledge to help your community in several ways with data science. Some specific areas where data science can be applied in the community include:
Predictive modeling: You could use data science techniques to build models that can predict future trends, events, or patterns in your community. These models could help community leaders make more informed decisions about things like resource allocation, budgeting, and planning.
Data visualization: You could use data visualization techniques to help community members understand complex data and patterns. By creating visually appealing and intuitive data visualizations, you could help people make sense of data related to things like crime rates, health outcomes, and economic indicators.
Analytics: You could use data science techniques to analyze data from various sources such as social media, IoT devices, or governmental data in order to understand community needs, sentiment, and trends and provide insights accordingly.
Fraud detection: You could help community organizations, businesses and government agencies to detect and prevent fraud using data science and machine learning techniques.
Infrastructure: With your knowledge in engineering, you could be involved in projects that are using sensor data, machine learning, computer vision and other data science tools to keep track on infrastructure condition and predict future maintenance needs.
Education: You can use data science in the education sector by developing tools to predict student performance, identify potential dropouts, and provide personalized recommendations for students' education.
It's worth noting that this is not an exhaustive list and there may be other ways that data science can be applied to help your community, depending on the specific needs and challenges of the community, it's good to research and study the needs of your community.

Can you provide a bit more context for your question? I'm not an expert in data science, but rather in product management and product marketing - both disciplines that rely on data science engineers to help us better understand the problems our customer encounter. I do not know all of the various aspects of the data science domain, but I do know that the best data science engineers are those that are creative, curious, and customer-focused. Ultimately, every professional in business has one goal - to be more effective in delivering solutions to problems folks are willing to spend money to fix. Determining which are the biggest problems to solve is an art as well as a science. Hope this helps!
Try connecting to a data science engineer community either as part of your school or an industry you're interested in
Good luck and stay curious!
