Rosemary’s Answer
Networking is a means to an end, however, your main objective shouldn't be to ask for a referral or job in the initial conversations or messages. You should add value to the conversation too and be appreciative. Try to use grammar and spelling checking tools to make your messages look polished and without mistakes. Always begin the conversation by asking them about themselves, their day, likes/dislikes etc. It should not be about you initially. Follow up politely, not asking why they never replied or answered you. You should build a relationship on trust before requesting anything. Always remember to add value.

Hello Imran, if you intend to use your network for help, you should nourish those relationships. Build on them even when you don't need something from them, allow them to become your work friends and not simply additional resources. Once it becomes part of your normal, you will not have to wonder if you should or should not reach out to your contact. Hopefully the same will happen in return and the benefits will be mutually exclusive. Good luck!

Remember to build a community. Nowadays, you can engage in conversations through LinkedIn, Twitter, and by joining Discord servers. Start connecting with your closer peers (classmates, co-workers), attending activities, workshops, etc. (both virtually and in-person). That way, extending your network will come off naturally rather than pushy. You get help and referral when needed once you build a community of people you studied with, worked with, or related to in some way or another.
