Honestly, it depends on what you are interested in. I work in Healthcare and you have to want to help people in this field. Sometimes, it isn't always about money when it comes to finding what you are passionate about.

Kaylee,

You are fortunate because being in Rock Hill also give you access to Charlotte opportunities as well, so don't limit yourself. You can expand your market to both South and North Carolina.

1- Set up some time with you Guidance Counselor and ask to do some Career Aptitude Test or other such tools they might have at their disposal. The internet and your local librarian are also great resources for this.

2- Think about the things you like and are good at. You will spend 40+ hours a week at your job so you want to do something that you will enjoy. Making good money is great but if you hate what you do, you will not be happy and you need to have a balance in your life. That matters.

3- Do some research and find out what careers/jobs currently have shortages in personnel. Do they align with your interest? Those are the fields that will likely be paying a premium so find out what classes you can be taking now in high school that will help you set the foundation to be ready to fill those roles.

4- Will you need to go to College or Trade School for additional training? Start looking at what the needs are now, so you are prepared. Do not wait until your senior year to find out you should have taken other courses this year and next. Chart your path.

The good thing is that you are asking the right questions now and you have time to make changes if you need to.
Good Luck!

To be financially comfortable one has to choose a right career which lasts long and also pays well.

Saving is kind of earning, earning good salary and also spending wisely one can be become more comfortable financially over the years.

School counselors/College counselors are very good resource for you at school to start with. School counselors are highly educated, professionally certified individuals who help students succeed in school and plan their career.

One has to ask these questions while choosing the career.
Successful career is all about job Growth, Opportunities, Salary, Satisfaction.
For each of your interest, compare them how each one stands in relation to growth, opportunities, Salary and Satisfaction
My son was interested in photography when he was in his high school, I told him that he can pursue it as a hobby or second job but working in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) would bring in more opportunities, better paying jobs with long career. I had asked him to talk to professional in different careers to get some idea and see what interests him most.
He found his interest in Graphics Information Technology and pursuing his undergrad right now.
Talk to someone who works in particular profession to know pros and cons, so you get an idea about it and helps you compare and guide you in deciding which career to choose.
Also, it's easy to switch careers in initial few years of a Carrer, so you can try out one and see what it brings

Hello Kaylee,

Yes, you have an important question and the answer can be very broad!

The York County Economic Development website lists corporate headquarters, financial service firms, healthcare institutions, major manufacturers, and distribution companies as major employers in the area, but this leaves out education, sports tourism (which has become a major source of jobs and income within the city), and retail. So, don't forget those possibilities, too.
https://www.yorkcountyed.com/locate/whos-here/major-employers

The South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforces has an 11-page summary of job opportunities in York County including salary and growth for many careers. It's a lot to look at but would be worth using to see if anything might be of particular interest to you.
https://lmi.dew.sc.gov/lmi%20site/Documents/CommunityProfiles/04000091.pdf

Not all jobs in South Carolina require a four year college degree. In fact nearly 50% do not. So, look at all your options for a lucrative and enjoyable career. SCETV has several videos of younger folks who have started working without a college degree. Take some time and look through these.
https://www.scetv.org/stories/tags/your-path-your-journey

While salary is important, keep in mind that several major employers in York County will always need employees -- like schools, hospitals and clinics, groceries -- while others have ups and downs with the economy -- like retail sales and entertainment.

Think about what you like to do and what you're good at (math, writing, art, serving others, health, science, etc.). A good career is one that you enjoy doing AND can provide you a good standard of living, but you won't get far if you don't like what you're doing or if you're not good at it!

Touch base with guidance counselors at Rock Hill High School, the Applied Technology Center, York Technical College, Winthrop University, etc. Most counselors have tools that can help you evaluate your aptitude for certain professions. But remember, it's YOUR choice -- or, as you say, be the author of your life.

Good luck!
