Gabrielle’s Answer
Michael,
The role of a construction manager is to basically make sure a project gets completed on time and within budget. Construction managers (general contractor) take the plans from the engineers and architects, develop contracts and hire subcontractors (like concrete workers, carpenters, plumbers etc), and manage the construction process until the work is completed. Construction Managers are the middle-men between architects, engineers, owners (the people who fund the project), and the subcontractors (the people who physically build the project).
Hope this helps!

Michael,
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics "Construction managers, often called general contractors or project managers, coordinate and supervise a variety of projects, including building public, residential, commercial, and industrial structures as well as roads and bridges. Either a general contractor or a construction manager oversees the construction phase of a project, including personnel, but a construction manager may also consult with the client during the design phase to help refine construction plans and control costs.
These managers coordinate construction processes so that projects meet design specifications and are completed on time within budget. Some construction managers are responsible for several projects—for example, building multiple homes—at once.
Construction managers work closely with other building specialists, such as architects, civil engineers, and tradesworkers, including stonemasons, electricians, and carpenters."
Keep in mind construction workers work in extreme conditions such as hot or cold weather. Stand up for long periods of time, and may work with heavy equipment or machinery. However, a career in construction can be very lucrative but does require hard word and experience.
Good luck.

Mostly walk around and be useless, or worse yet, invent stupid ideas to impede progress on the jobsite. Construction managers with no experience in the construction trades have a very difficult time getting anything accomplished. My advice, learn a trade before trying to manage one. It’s MUCH cheaper to get your education through a trade union too, than pay out of pocket for college!
Google United Brotherhood of Carpenters
Google International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
