Afrad’s Answer
Hi --
Great question and glad that you're thinking along these lines. That alone lets me know that you will be successful in anything you set your mind on!
That said, from my experience, these are some general qualities that will help drive success.
1. Work with Integrity! Always work with the highest level of honesty, trust and be straightforward.
2. Be Reliable! Show up and deliver on your promises. Do the things that you say will do.
3. Be Curious! Understand what you do. Don't be afraid to dig in, question things, ask why! Learn every step of the way.
4. Be Adaptive! Things are always changing. Be ready for it, expect it, change is inevitable. Take change as an opportunity for something new.
5. Be Open-minded! Perspective means there are many ways to look at the same thing. Be willing to accept differing opinions, it is not always simple as wrong or right.
6. Network, Network! Build and continue building strong relationships at all levels. Surround yourself with good people, whom you can support in some way and that support you. Have mentors, be a mentee.
7. Create a Self-Brand! Make yourself known for the attributes that you want highlighted, whether your character, your skills or your talents. Spend time identifying what you want to be known for, emulate those things and introduce yourself at every chance with that!
Hope this helps!

Mack’s Answer
After 25 years in manufacturing and research of a Fortune 500 company, I taught high school for a decade or so. I tried to get my students to realize that there are four things that they should be learning in EVERY class they take whether science and math (MY courses), English, Art, Band, Physical Education, Civics, or what have you. You can work on learning these skills while you are in school and then you will be well-practiced for doing the same in your career. They are, in no particular order:
-Working with others
-Communicating
-Problem-solving
-Lifelong learning
Best of luck in your career (in school and later).

My advice:
1. Read what Afrad wrote. It is priceless. Not many words, but every word has substance.
2. Read it again
3. Memorize as much as you can of it
4. Print a copy for future reference.
My intent was to share some wisdom of my own, but he said it all so succinctly that nothing I wrote would improve it in any way.

All of the answers I've read here are excellent. I would add a couple of things:
1. Know your strengths and lean into them, stand out as someone that is confident and driven.
2. Stay flexible and curious about yourself as you grow and the work around you as it changes.
3. Be a change agent and look at things to from the outside in to gain perspective.
4. Learn to ask for and accept feedback from those you trust. It can be hard to hear but can be that gift that pushes you towards your best self.
Best of luck to you!

I think being open-minded and non-judgmental will take you a long way in any profession. You are going to meet so many different people with different views and opinions. These are two characteristics, among others, to be mindful of.
