If the ideal job I want does not have an ideal career path, then what do I do? Do I make it myself or should I give up and switch and niche up?
I've always wanted to be a fiction writer but when looking at professional jobs/career paths, writing is never there. I would love to make short stories more than anything but it doesn't seem like it's a job I could make a comfortable living off of.

Hi Ashley! This is a great question that I think a lot of people struggle with. There are a lot of careers out there that don't have a defined career path and you do kind of have to make your own.
I don't work in the writing field, but I can think of a few places you can start! First, I would recommend looking into self-publication where you can publish any short stories or works you have. This will get you started with some initial publishing and get your name out there as a published author. I would also recommend looking into various publishing houses and consider an editor job at those companies. This is a great way to get started in the field of writing. Lots of places have writing classes, like public libraries, so this is a great place to get connections and get some critiques on your writing!
Hope this helps.

Hi Ashley,
It is definitely tough when the job you want doesn't have a clear path to follow. However choosing things that help you along that path, that help you improve those skills will definitely benefit you as well. If you love to write fiction, going to school for a writing degree is definitely a good option. It does also put you into the path of people who might help you network and lead you to the right people who can help you on your true career path. Finding those people might be hard at first, but starting from the beginning, like school and learning the skills and the ability to network will help you get closer and closer to where you want to be.

Hi Ashley: Sometimes the things that we like do not fit into a "box". This may make us question if it is something that we should be doing. That is where passion steps in. If you feel vary passionately about being a fiction writer, you have to just go for it. There are numerous examples of very successful fiction writers, whose works were adapted into film and theater. Society places limitations on us by emphasizing certain careers or jobs as the ideal, especially if those jobs are considered likely to lead to steady high wages. I think it is a wonderful to pursue your passion regardless of whether it fits a mold of what is commonly accepted. However, since supporting yourself is also important, you may have to find a job that would provide you a source of income while pursuing your dream of being a fiction writer.
Thank you, sharmela for the advice.

I understand the frustration. While getting my Bachelor's degree(with a main concentration in creative writing), one of my professors suggested that I self-publish through a site like Amazon. Many of their e-books can range in length. Also, I'd highly recommend starting a personal/story blog through WordPress or a similar software. Lastly, I would look into local book clubs. The more you branch out, the more possibilities become available. By starting early, your future options increase dramatically. Best of luck to you 👍

Hello:
Congratulations to your determination for the want and dedication for a road of betterment. Questions and inquiring can present a depth of knowledge that gifts the pathways forward a focused imprint.
The other responders presented a delightful guidance that welcomes potential in the paths you can embark within. Getting involved in more writing classes, in school if available, networking online with various people: LinkedIn (professional endeavors - internships, etc.), Twitter (WritingCommunity), and more can welcome you to integrate with other writers. Places like the masterclass.com has many writing elements for learning (James Patterson, Judy Blume, R.L. Stine, Margaret Atwood, Joyce Carol Oates, etc.).
Copywriting, content creator, and various duties can help pave the way for more opportunities. In the heart of writing, every wisdom learned, every interaction engulfed, and every observational lens seen can become the beating heart that beautifies each piece that your creativity embodies.
Gratitude inside your steps.
God Bless,
