How’s Answer

You can learn the technical part of graphic and web design - using programs like Adobe Illustrator or coding HTML/CSS - without taking “art” classes, but to understand the principles of problem solving and visual design, specialized classes in graphic design are highly useful and give you an advantage over people who only have technical skills.

Besides basic design principles, you’ll be exposed to education about color theory, typography, some behavioral psychology, creative problem solving, and hopefully how to work with clients. My classes in the history of graphic design were also super-helpful, as they exposed me to the best work in the industry over the past 100 years.

Hello! My name is Kristin, and I work as a UX Design Manager. I specialize in web design and collaborate with graphic designers daily. To answer your question, you don't necessarily need to take art classes for graphic design or web design. However, it's essential to acquire basic knowledge in certain areas.

To make your learning more actionable, follow these steps:

1. Study the basics: Focus on learning the essentials, such as composition, color theory, and responsive design.

2. Use online resources: Numerous articles and videos are available online for free, offering valuable information on these topics. Dedicate time to self-learning using these resources.

3. Complete practice projects: This helps you develop and showcase your skills. Search for project ideas online and create a portfolio of designs to demonstrate your abilities during interviews.

4. Identify your preferred field: Since graphic design and web design are different, determine which type of work you're more interested in and excel at. Focus on practicing projects that align with that particular field.

By following these steps, you can gain the necessary skills and create an impressive portfolio to succeed in graphic or web design, without having to take art classes.

My son doing bachelors degree in Graphics Information Technology, his answer for your question is written below.

'It can be helpful and interesting to take but is not needed. What is most important is that you keep creating things and trying to solve design problems on your own. Creativity and design skill comes only from practice, and taking an art class won't necessarily help with that. Although you can learn design principles from an art class, designing and creativity ultimately comes from ... well ... designing and creating. Haha seems obvious right? But it's true. Get out there and try to design something. Either make up a brand or design something for an existing one. Keep going and you will get good experience which will help you in college. '

Hope this helps! Good Luck.

Hi Anastasiia, it's fantastic to hear that you have a passion for graphic and web designing! Those are two areas that I absolutely love, and I was fortunate enough to work at Canva. Taking art classes can undoubtedly enhance your perspective and broaden your understanding of the world. For instance, my studies in art helped me appreciate colours, text, shapes, and patterns in a whole new light.

Although conducting your own research and investigation into art can be challenging, your school offers invaluable guidance and structure. Art classes provide countless opportunities for you to practice your creativity and hone your graphic and web designing skills. Remember, practice makes perfect!

Moreover, the work and artwork you produce in class can significantly expand your portfolio. A robust, diverse portfolio is the key to landing your dream job in the future. Keep up the fantastic work, and don't be afraid to let your creativity soar!

Kristina’s Answer

Hi Anastasia,

No, you don't necessary need to take art classes to become a good graphic/web designer. In fact I know people that are very good at arts (drawing, illustrations etc.) but are very bad designers. But you do need to know the basic principles of composition, colour theory and good typography. Mastery comes with practice and looking at really good design work by other people also helps (platforms like Behance and Awwwards have many good examples).

Start playing with tools for design like Figma, Photoshop and others from the Adobe Creative Suite (there are big discounts for students), experiment and try to create your own projects/artworks.

But in the end if you have the time, means and are eager to take classes it would be fun and broadening experience for you, so go ahead!

Sincerely,
Kristina
