Great question Richard!

I cannot wait to read first hand responses, if that does occur. This is a profession as a former guidance counselor; students and myself would joke and dream about as a job/career to attain after completing welding training and refining your expertise as a welder through years of experience. I am sure I missed some important points regarding this pathway, but depending on your age/grade-level I would advise talking with your counselor, strongly researching and shadowing the vocational/career tech. programs that are offered, and recognize more than likely you would need to complete a welding certification as well as progress to being capable of completing such work.

I do know the pay is strong, the demand rather high, and companies requiring such professionals rather small. Research companies that employ underwater welders/ocean welding (don't forget about the Great Lakes, etc.) and develop an understanding of how such companies are structured. Who & what type of individuals do they are at entry level and what is the typical career progression? I hope this helps and thanks!

Hi Richard,

You're embarking on an exciting and challenging journey by pursuing a career in underwater welding. To excel in this field, it's essential to develop a diverse skill set. Here are some key areas to focus on:

1. Swimming: Being a strong swimmer is crucial for underwater work. Keep practicing and improving your swimming skills.

2. Breathing exercises: Incorporate yoga into your routine, as it can improve your breathing control and overall well-being, which will be beneficial for your daily tasks.

3. Quick thinking and decision-making: In unpredictable situations, it's vital to think on your feet and make prompt decisions. Cultivate these abilities to navigate any challenges that may arise.

4. Skin care: Since you'll spend a lot of time underwater, take good care of your skin. Invest in quality lotions to keep your body hydrated and healthy.

These are just a few suggestions to help you prepare for your new career. Remember to prioritize your safety and well-being as you dive into this adventurous profession.

Best of luck, future diver!
