I did have trouble getting a job as an automotive engineer. I graduated with a mechanical engineering degree in 1990. That year the auto companies weren't hiring many engineers. I interviewed with other companies doing other things. But the question "why did I go to this school?" I answered "because I want to work for a car company". So I didn't get hired elsewhere probably for that reason. However I did get an internship in Germany (I was in US) for an auto company which was exciting. However 3 years later probably a related market downturn hit there too. I was ready to leave anyway and came back to the US. While I was in Germany in the 1990's I saw electronics was a big thing in Automotive. So I went to grad school to get more education in controls and electronics. Now I work for a truck company in South East US. It's warmer there than in near Detroit. Trucks are interesting too. They help every other business work.
