Diane’s Answer

While you're still in high school, make the most of your free time by exploring the exciting world of real estate, such as investing, flipping, and renting. As a tech product designer with similar passions, I also dabble in real estate when time permits and have successfully rented out a few properties. There are numerous inventive methods to begin investing in real estate with little or no money, like REITs and crowdfunding.

To get a head start, research and stay updated on the real estate market, follow industry leaders, and immerse yourself in interior design and architecture channels. Gaining this knowledge early on will be invaluable. When you turn 18, you can become a licensed real estate agent, which can help you save money for future investments or house flipping.

I recommend obtaining your real estate license while you're still figuring out your career path. This doesn't mean you have to be a realtor; you can creatively use your license in other fields, such as interior design. So, dive in and start learning – the possibilities are endless!

Helen J.’s Answer

One thing you can do now is find a realtor that is willing to have you intern or volunteer with them. You’ll get a good sense of what being a realtor is like and if there are certain aspects that appeal most to you.

You can also contact a realtor, architect or interior designer to schedule a one time informational interview. Brainstorm a list of 20+ questions beforehand and ask if you can record the conversation.

Helen J. recommends the following next steps:

Consider which suggestion you want to try first
Prepare a script of what you’ll say in an email or by phone to the person(s) you plan to contact
Create a list of questions in advance of contacting the professional.
Send an email or make a first phone call to ask about interning, volunteering or doing an informational interview.
Follow up your initial contact with a call 3 days later.
