Hello Abby,
As someone who has extensively researched remote work and supervision for my doctoral thesis, your query is right up my alley! The employment scene has experienced a significant shift in recent years. Thanks to advancements in technology and connectivity, the conventional nine-to-five office routine is no longer the only path for many professionals. The appeal of online and remote work is growing, offering flexibility, independence, and the chance to work from virtually anywhere.
Getting a remote job might seem intimidating, especially for those who are used to the conventional job hunt process. Many job seekers wrongly think they need to meet a long list of qualifications and requirements to be considered for an online role. The reality is, the key to securing an online or remote job is not about ticking boxes, but about developing specific skills and adopting the right attitude.
Embrace Flexibility and Versatility
Employers often seek flexibility in remote workers. Remote work often involves dealing with different time zones, communication channels, and work settings. Hence, showing your ability to adjust to changing situations and stay productive despite potential challenges is vital.
Also, versatility is crucial in remote work. Employers appreciate candidates who can juggle multiple roles and take on various tasks as required. Whether it's managing projects, creating content, or providing customer support, demonstrating proficiency in various skills will make you an indispensable part of any remote team.
Develop Strong Communication Skills
Effective communication is a key element of successful remote work. Without the benefit of in-person interaction, remote workers heavily rely on written and verbal communication to share ideas, give feedback, and work with colleagues.
Showcasing strong communication skills in your resume, cover letter, and during interviews is critical. Highlight your ability to express ideas clearly, listen attentively, and work well with team members, even from a distance. Also, familiarity with communication tools like Slack, Zoom, and Asana can strengthen your remote job application.
Highlight Your Remote Work Experience (If Any)
While previous remote work experience is not always necessary for a remote job, it can give you an advantage. If you have experience working remotely, either as a freelancer or as part of a remote team, make sure to emphasize it on your resume and LinkedIn profile.
Mention specific projects you've worked on, highlight achievements or milestones you've reached while working remotely, and stress how you effectively managed your time and stayed productive outside a traditional office setting. Even limited remote work experience can boost your appeal to potential employers if you show your ability to excel in a remote setting.
Show Self-Motivation and Discipline
Remote work demands a high level of self-motivation and discipline. Without the structure and supervision of a traditional office, remote workers need to manage their time well, stay focused on tasks, and meet deadlines without constant supervision.
During your job hunt, share examples of how you've shown self-motivation and discipline in past roles. Point out times when you took the initiative, managed projects on your own, or exceeded expectations without needing constant guidance. Showing your ability to excel in a self-directed work environment will reassure employers of your suitability for remote roles.

I found a company called FlexJobs.com which only offers remote jobs. They have a wide range of jobs available. They also have many resources I found useful, such as webinars on how to tailor your resume for remote jobs as well as how to write cover letters for remote jobs. There is a monthly fee for this site, but is worth it I think. Hope this helps.

A challenge I've come across is locating an online job that permits logging in from different states. For instance, I'm employed by an online school, but due to tax reasons, they can only hire individuals residing in the same state as the school.
