How do I shadow genetics counselors?

I am two years post undergrad and have been working in patient care since graduation. I am looking into getting my masters in genetics counseling. I want to make sure the career is right for me and get some experience before applying, any advice?

Hi Lydia,

For a thriving and successful career journey, it's crucial to blend ongoing education with a solid professional network.

Staying on top of your field requires constant learning. This can be achieved by enrolling in courses, participating in workshops or conferences, and digesting related books or articles. By doing so, you'll not only keep up with the latest industry trends and gain new skills but also be better equipped to adapt to changes and tackle fresh challenges.

Building a robust professional network is just as vital. Find mentors and partners in your field who can offer useful advice and open doors to new possibilities. You can do this by attending industry gatherings, becoming a member of professional groups, and participating in online forums. A powerful network can lead to exciting opportunities, provide insightful feedback, and keep you informed about industry shifts.

In order to strike a balance between personal and professional growth, it's important to set clear objectives for both areas of your life. Determine what you hope to achieve professionally and personally. Develop a plan to reach these goals, and regularly check your progress to ensure you're on the right path.

The NSGC website has a page where you can find genetic counselors who welcome student communication. This is a great way to reach out to genetic counselors and ask them for shadowing or information interviewing opportunities. You can also also join the genetic counseling prospective student network to keep up-to-date which is a helpful way to meet GCs who give talks and workshops.
