What is one of your favorite things to do as a editor?

Hello, I am a middle school student and I am curious about being an editor. Editors seem like a fun career to me and I would love to edit things. I would like to know about the activities of being an editor and if it is a fun and entertaining career to do, or if it’s not?

If any retired or working editor could answer my question, could you please provide me answers to my questions?

This opportunity is for the right person, and this level of independence can be rewarding. Many other editors enjoy the freedom to work from home - setting their own time and choosing their own projects - requires discipline. Although it can be daunting to provide absolute accuracy on every edit, especially correcting spelling, punctuations and grammar. But If you are the right person who loves and thrives in challenges like these, this might be a worthwhile opportunity to explore. You won't never know.

I hope this answer help your inquires.

Juan, editing can be an amazing career, mostly because it is so broad, and editors get to select what they do.

For the past 25 years I have edited medical content, mostly books. Those books help train medical students and residents. They help practing physicians stay on top of the lastest information in their specialty. I know, though no what has told me, that the content I have helped create has saved lives. I still get a kick out of that. By the way, I have never edited any manuscript. I find authors, negotiate agreements, manage the publishing process, work with marketing to promote the content. I have worked with some of the greatest physicians and surgeons in pediatrics, neurosurgery, cardiology and many other specialties. These are awesome people. Today all the content I work on goes on the web. I am working to find new ways to help train phyisicans, think video and audio. I am looking at how AI can help do this better and differently.

I would encourage you to combine your interest with editing with something else you love. Maybe you love baseball, outer space, or gaming. Editors with specialized knowledge in these areas will be in high demand. I know editors who work on business content, how to code computers, test prep for specialied exams. I know editors at pharmaceutical companies who edit the content their employers send to the FDA. I do not know any, but there are video editors and music editors.

Editing can be an amazing career. Find your passion and go for it.

Kristen’s Answer

Editing can be a fun and rewarding job. I'm an online news editor, meaning every day brings something new to my inbox for review. In the course of my work, I get to learn a lot about current events and the community, help writers improve their storytelling skills and writing, and fact-check materials to ensure what we publish is accurate and concise. Seeing a story take shape is fun, and the rewards are immediate. It can be challenging to be an editor, too. You're often working on a deadline in a newsroom, so you need to be able to think fast and know your editing rules, and also be able to reconfigure the content to make a logical story progression. That can be a challenge. On top of that, news editors often look at the story in the context of past reporting and other local and beyond-local events and news. For example, when reporting on actions taken by a city council, those actions may relate to past actions that should be mentioned in the story to provide background or help the reader understand the bigger picture. Editors can help a writer link these things together. Depending on the size of the news organization you work for, there's also an opportunity to do more. In my small newsroom, I also write headlines and photo captions, develop news graphics, select photos to accompany stories, and do the story layout and publishing.

Good luck in whichever type of editing you choose to pursue. I always think the world needs more editors!

The Editor role, as many have pointed out, can take on various shapes. I currently hold a position that was once called Editor, then renamed Learning Architect, and most recently, Learning Experience Designer. My team and I are in charge of creating and refining math programs for students from preschool to 12th grade. We ensure the content is grammatically correct and accurate in terms of math concepts. We constantly strive to enhance the content using several digital authoring tools. The part of my job I enjoy the most is working with the digital content we've created, reviewed, and released for students' use. It's rewarding to know that our work positively impacts students and teachers.

If you have the opportunity to do so, I highly recommend reaching out to those in the field to see if you can job shadow or interview them.
