Go to the website of the entity you are interested in employment with. Search the careers section or look for postings on linkedin. Read through the entire job description, compensation, and benefits. If you don't find it there. There's usually a contact section to ask questions about any concerns you may have about the company. The response time frame is usually great. Google is also a great tool for overall information and can lead you to great links. Good luck with your endeavors.

Hello, Anneliese !

A career should always be chosen because you have a passion for it and I see that you want to think about going into a protective services field. That is very admirable. Before considering it for the benefits that may be offered to you by an employer, you will need to work on which specific career you want as there are options and you can explore all the options.

The protective services fields are Correctional Officers, Bailiffs, Firefighters, Fire Inspectors, Police, Detectives, Private Detectives, Investigators, Security Guards and even Gambling Surveillance Officers. So you have a lot to choose from. Your first concern would be to choose a specific field of work so that you can fully prepare for it. Become familiar with what will be required of you academically as well as experience for each position. Once you have narrowed it down, and it's okay if you're undecided, it will make it easier to learn more about your focused career choice.

It would not be much help for you to know the benefits people are getting right now who are working in the above lines of work. The reason that the benefits wouldn't be a strong factor is because what is offered changes from time to time in the workplace. You can call each office and ask their Human Resources departments what benefits are offered, but that may change by the time you enter the career. Each position has different offerings so for the specifics of what is offered today you can ask directly at the different agencies. Then you would have to repeat it again to ask when you are ready to apply for whichever position.

If you apply for work with your city, county or state, I think you can guess that you'd be getting at least Medical and Dental Insurance which is usual. But it is impossible to actually know for a future position. Your city police department doesn't list their benefits on the Employment tab at their website. Right now, your County Sheriff's Office offers Medical and Dental Insurance, Vacation Leave that increases over time, Personal or Holiday Leave depending on classification, Sick Leave, Paid Parental Leave, Military Leave, Bereavement Leave, and more. They also offer a retirement pension after five years. I would advise checking all the websites of the agencies or companies that hire in the town you want to work in to get the current information and then check back with them before you apply. The only person that could tell you the exact benefits would be right there at each office. It would be worth getting an idea and finding out even if it's a lot of reading or phone calling.
