What to do when you have no idea what career to go into?

Hi, I am currently in grade 10, and many of my classmates seem to already have their whole life planned out. I live in Canada, and I really want to get into an American University, but the chances are slim due to my lack of opinion on what career I really want. In school, I am doing well in math, and science. However, I know I can go into science if I wanted to, but my parents are urging me to go into business. Sometimes they tell me to go into law as well. Right now, I am honestly so confused with what kind of a career path I should be taking. Right now, course selections for grade 11 is happening, and they have a direct impact on the courses I will take in university, or what university programs I will get in. I currently chose: English, Math, Bio, Chem, Physics, Music, Music 2, Harmony, Canadian Law. I am also considering taking AP classes because apparently American universities look favourably at that. I really don't know, what I want as a career in life. I feel like I do not know if the courses I am taking is really what I want. Help? #career #university #high-school #stressed

Hi Jackie,

Don't feel stressed about it. Most of us in fact majority of us are unclear in grade 10 about our future career and take it up more randomly. As you mentioned you are good in Maths and Science that makes Engineering and Medical two good options for bachelors.

In case you would like to go for business that you can do anytime, you can also opt for masters in management / innovation or other diploma/specialization courses for business, this will enable you with flavor of both techie as well as management.

Thank you comment icon Hey Jackie, As you have already taken a decision that what you are good at. So its answers your question as well. The Subjects what you have taken is related to Engineering. So just keep going untill you are done with 12th Grade. Anyways even you are an engineer or Lawyer by Education still you got time to get into business anytime. So just go ahead with your studies where you do well. Good luck.. Kathiresan T

Don't presuppose that what you choose to do now must define your life, that will help with some of the stress. Do what interests you now, and if you have a wide variety of interests you may want to look at Liberal Arts colleges which can help expand critical thinking skills. I was a Political Science major and ended up in technology, so changing career paths as life develops is not an impossibility.

Jackie,

The best advise I can give you is not to panic and try to pick a career so soon. A lot of your friends think they have what they want to do now, but that could change in a blink of an eye. Try many different things, do things because you like them or find them interesting not just because you think a US University will look better upon you for it. When you find the thing you like you'll know it, even if it takes you many more years.

I have worked in the technology field with people who went to college for Zoology, economics, acting, insurance, etc. What you study does not absolutely define what you'll end up doing.

Good Luck!

Its almost impossible to plan ahead what you will be doing for the rest of your life. I would recommend not to even try. Make sure you pick good foundations for your first year courses and then make up your mind as you move through college. As previous answers point out - you can never go wrong with maths - its a great foundation for any line of work - especially if you decide to go after finance or a business major.
