Hello Evan,
To get an internship in the Engineering Field as a Highschooler, follow these steps:
Identify Your Interests: The first step is to identify which specific area of engineering you are interested in. This could be mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, or environmental engineering, among others. Researching the field and speaking with professionals or teachers can help you make an informed decision.
Prepare Yourself: Gain a strong foundation in the necessary academic subjects such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Participating in science fairs, robotics clubs, or other related activities can also be beneficial.
Build a Strong Resume: Tailor your resume to highlight any relevant experience or projects you have completed. Include any awards or honors you have received, as well as your academic achievements.
Network: Connect with professionals in your desired field through LinkedIn, industry events, or local organizations such as the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) or Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). Building relationships with these individuals can lead to valuable opportunities and insights into the industry.
Apply for Internships: Look for internships through your school’s career center or online resources such as USAJobs, Indeed, or Glassdoor. Be sure to customize your application for each position and follow up with a thank-you note after the interview.
Prepare for the Interview: Research the company and prepare answers to common interview questions. Dress professionally and arrive early to the interview location. Bring copies of your resume and references if requested.
Stay Persistent: If you don’t receive an offer right away, don’t get discouraged! Keep applying and networking until you find an opportunity that fits your skills and interests.**

I totally agree with James & Pamela's answers. But in addition I would say that you ought to get a mentor in the field of your interest. The mentor may be a friend of the family, or someone you meet during the hiring process. But the best place may be a close by Engineering University, the local Civil engineering society, church or other non professional organization. Your mentor should have knowledge or even experience with internships at this point then spend time with your mentor, discussing your professional desires and interests and the details to get to where you want to go.
