Like in any field, the opportunity to advance in the security field is based for the most part on your willingness to work and obtain the necessary experience, training and certification. That is within your own control and based on your motivation and discipline. Whether you start as an entry level security officer or at a more advanced level if you truly desire to advance you must take the necessary steps to make yourself marketable. I started my career in security as a Director but that was after a 30 year career in law enforcement that is a long road and not for someone just starting out. My assistant or second in command started career as a security officer as his first real job and after 5 years advanced to the position of overnight manager by working very hard, learning the job and demonstrating a willingness to take on whatever challenges put in front of him. So the path you take can be very different but the consistent lesson is no matter where you start you are able to advance if you truly put in the effort. Is education, training, experience helpful? Absolutely but it comes from a great work ethic, dedication to the craft and a willingness to take on challenges. Your ability to advance is within your own control.

Hello Charles! As others have stated, Security is a very wide field - but with that, comes opportunity! There are many overlapping opportunities within 'security', and as long as one is able to continue to evolve and adapt, there is plenty of room for advancement. Understanding where you would like to start within security would be your first step, where your passions lay, and then setting career goals that continue to evolve so you continuously have targets you are aiming for. I would also suggest that you start building out your network as soon as possible (its never too early!). Generate a LinkedIn profile, and then locate professionals that either work in the security industry or work for companies/agencies you have an interest in. Your network is one of the strongest tools to leverage for career advancement. Good Luck!

In regular physical security, the type where a company provides guards or patrols, it is often limited in scope to either being a patrol person or a shift supervisor. However, security has become a very complex field. There are many more advanced positions. Industrial security, body-guards, NASA, electronic security, credit-card fraud, and the list goes on.
Once you get into some of these other areas, there are always opportunities for growth, or you can change employers to move up. This is a very common way of getting ahead - by changing employers.
Keep your resume current, keep your eyes open, and don't be afraid to take chances when opportunity knocks.

Charles, transitioning from a Law background to security can actually work wonders. Many of the topics within security go hand in hand with legal and compliance policies in an organization so having prior understanding and experience with legal aspects can help tremendously. Having a few security related certifications can also help boost your transition as well.
