What are some downsides and advantages to civil engineering?

I am a freshmen in high-school who wants to get an idea of what career I want to choose and I want advice on what civil engineering really is so I can get a better understanding about it.

My additional advice is to see if there are resources in your school, such as Counselors, who have insights into local Civil Engineering careers and/or connections to organizations who employ Civil Engineers. Once you have some of the names of organizations, connect with them to determine if you could speak directly with a Civil Engineer or more than one so you can discuss with them their views on the position and understand the pros/cons of the position. With that knowledge, you'll have a better view of what a typical day looks like as a Civil Engineer and determine if you'd like to explore a career in the field further and/or if you'd like to pursue a different path, whether still in Engineering or not.
