Michelle’s Answer

Hello, Natalie !

Cake is neither pastry or bread. They are all different. Cake is cake.

The pastry involvement can be discovered by visiting a Bakery that sells pastries. Go to as many different bakeries as possible because some bakeries specialize in pastries of different countries. There are pastries represented by so many countries. Try to find a Mexican Bakery. You will find that their pastries are a cross between bread and cake. It's all very delightful !

It is so wonderful that you are active with this now in high school ! When you are in your senior year, you can apply for scholarships for culinary school or whichever school you go for a Bachelors Degree (which is highly recommended to do). You can find scholarships online and write the information down for future reference.

For now, you can take as many Family and Consumer Science and Life Skills classes while in high school. There are also classes online that you can take. The more you bake, the more experienced you will become. Think about obtaining part time work in a bakery for experience, too. You already probably have the Imperial Measuring System down, which is what we use in the U.S., but teach yourself the Metric System as well and learn how to convert between the two.

The thing that sets pastries apart from bread or cake is the type of dough, the fat content, shape, size, filling methods, the way you bake it, and the ratio of ingredients. Do not hesitate to experiment with recipes at least once a week. Your family will love you for it !

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !

Howard’s Answer

In the Culinary Arts business, there are specialty areas of work. Baking can include bread and pastry. A Pastry chef can make bread, and a baker can make pastry. In France, it is broken down into two parts. Pâtissier or pastry and Boulanger which is bread. Croissants are considered bread and cakes are pastries. Both share the same training and similar techniques. You should learn both and see which you like better.
I hope this helps you.

Evany’s Answer

Hi Natalie, No cake is not called a pastry though but it’s categorized under pastries , so is bread which are baked products.
Let’s just say pastries is the general name for all to baked goods made with doughs that are rich in fat (like shortcrust pastry, puff pastry, or choux pastry) and often used for pies, tarts, and other desserts.

Cake, on the other hand, is a sweet baked good made from a batter that usually includes flour, sugar, eggs, and a leavening agent like baking powder or baking soda. While it shares similarities with pastries, it is typically classified separately due to its unique texture and preparation method.
