Ana J’s Answer

Hi Dani, As a high school student, I was deeply passionate about math, physics, and chemistry. My journey to becoming a Civil Engineer was a bit unconventional since I graduated from high school outside the U.S. I began by taking courses at a community college, which prepared me to apply to a Civil Engineering program. When I was ready, I reached out to the admissions office for guidance and successfully navigated the application process.

If you’re considering a similar path, be sure to check the admission requirements at the universities you’re interested in. Don’t hesitate to connect with an advisor or admissions office, as they can provide invaluable insights and support.

Civil Engineering, like other engineering careers, is incredibly rewarding. If this is something you’re passionate about, don’t let anyone deter you from pursuing it.

In my case, I graduated as a Civil Engineer, but my career evolved into Project Management. It’s been a fulfilling journey that has taken me across various industries, from energy to commercial construction, and most recently, into the human resources field.

One of the greatest things about engineering is its versatility. Whether you choose to become a design engineer, product manager, project engineer, consultant, business owner, researcher, teacher, or sustainability expert, you’ll always carry the mindset of an engineer. Engineers combine science and creativity to solve problems and make the world a better place, and that’s a skillset you’ll use no matter where your career takes you.

Good luck!

Becoming a civil engineer starts with a strong foundation in math and science. You'll need to earn a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, which usually takes about four years. After that, consider getting some practical experience through internships. Finally, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam will get you on the path to becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE). It’s a challenging but rewarding career!

Hitesh’s Answer

Hi Dani, here are few pointers based on my personal experience going back to my student days when I was trying to figure out how to get into engineering. I hope you find these useful.

I didn't know why, but I was simply interested in pursuing engineering course. I guess, it was the status and respect an engineer can command in my immediate community and social circle which motivated me to want to go for it. This is when I was in my high school. I came to know that one needs to pursue Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry (PCM) subjects at school in order to be eligible for the admission to engineering courses. So, to answer your question, you will need to first check the admission criteria of the institutes which offer Civil engineering courses.

I am sure you would have already known above or find it out from Google. But I would like you to first ask a self question - Why do I want to get into Civil engineering or for that matter any other engineering streams? Answer to this question is important because you are going to commit 4-5 years of UG program and then many more years of your life assuming you will get into a career relating to Civil engineering.

For how to get into the Civil engineering, listing out few actions below

Hitesh recommends the following next steps:

Get into studies of PCM subjects to be eligible for the engineering courses.
Getting into good institute can be very competitive. So, it might be worth preparing for aptitude tests like SAT and it's advance version specific to science and mathematics
Seek guidance from seniors students who have already got into engineering or preparing to get into it.

Hi Dani, it's great to hear you are interested in Civil Engineering. It is a fantastic field of Engineering where you really see the results of you work in a huge way as you contribute to society. It will typically require a 4–5-year College Education including an internship. A good foundation and understanding of Math and Science (Physics) is needed prior to college. That said, once you enter college you will have some time (possibly the 1st year) to adjust your Engineering Major. In general, I would say to follow your interests and passion. Really focus on Math and Science and align your personal interests with your major. In my case, I began as a freshman majoring in civil engineering then switched to mechanical engineering by my sophomore year after completing the initial course in introduction to Engineering. Stay focused on your passion and best of luck to you.
