i've heard college is beneficial from some, and a complete waste of time from others. how do i know if it's right for me?

I don't have any specific hobbies I'm too involved in, so I'm not too sure what to choose for my major in college. it's still early, but I want to be prepared early.

What is the schedule of a computer programmer on a day to day basis? Do they make their own hours or does it depend on where they work? How long is an average work day?

I like music and would like to start song writing and I value my personal health and would like to be able to have time for workouts and I would like time for my family and friends I know I would be unreasonable for all of these things but it would be nice to be able to find time here and there...
