Are certain areas of the US better for automotive engineers or is the general position based in certain areas (ie Detroit with its car manufacturing legacy) ?

I want to break into the more brand name car companies and want to know what will be needed on my part to work my way in basically. What can I do besides work hard and get a promotion, should I focus on developing certain knowledge or work on certian projects? #automotive
