Michael’s Answer
I believe most colleges/universities will have a set curriculum for mechanical engineering majors especially for the freshman year, that would include basics such as math and sciences, but I would recommend thinking about any particular specialty you may be interested in for electives or areas of focus that you can choose to take as you progress in your college career. Those fields of interest could run the gambit from robotics, manufacturing, material sciences, product design, etc. As a mechanical engineer you have a unique opportunity of being able to be involved with a huge range of careers.

Yes, by the time you get to college, mechanical engineering is already a defined area of study and the required courses are laid out for you.
To prepare in high school, physics and as high level math as you can go (calculus usually) are useful. Also computer programming.
