Jessica’s Answer

I think it depends on what type of Industry you want to be in- most of the jobs I see in the Marketing/Client Services tend to have 'college degree' as a must. I work with Graphic Designers in the Learning & Development industry that is split- sometimes they require (any) college degree and sometimes not, placing more importance on the design software you are adept in. I personally know several Graphic Designers that work in the Trade Show industry (large scale layout/production) that do not have a college degrees, but came up through the ranks (and had a artist background.) I'd suggest finding out what type of graphic design work you like and what industries that falls in.

Brock’s Answer

Yes, it is totally possible. I've worked we several people that were self-trained and had a great portfolio to show what they can accomplish. More than ever it, if you can demonstrate the skill you can get the job. The key though is demonstrating the skill. Find ways to build up your portfolio and start creating an online social media and on designer portfolio sites like dribble.

Good luck!

Elijah’s Answer

Hi Brayden,

Yes it is possible to have a career as a graphic designer without attending college through building an exceptional portfolio, taking on non-paying opportunities to build your resume and trying to network with local business and other graphic designers. That being said, going to school would make this process more streamlined as you would have a lot more resources and opportunities for success. If you are adamant about not going to school for graphic design, I suggest looking for opportunities around you to build your resume and if you have not started already, create some personal projects to showcase your artistic skills and posting everything on your own personal website is a must!

Hope this helped!

James Constantine’s Answer

Hi there, Brayden!

Just so you know, it's totally possible to carve out a successful career in graphic design without ever stepping foot into a college. There are many graphic designers who have made it big through self-learning, online classes, workshops, and hands-on experience. Building a robust portfolio and acquiring real-world experience via internships or freelance gigs can be just as worthwhile as a formal education in this arena. Plus, there's a wealth of online resources and communities where budding graphic designers can hone their skills. But remember, while a degree might not be a necessity for some roles, having formal education can unlock more doors and offer a deeper grasp of design principles and methodologies. In the end, the road to a thriving career in graphic design sans college demands commitment, ongoing learning, and a powerful portfolio to exhibit your abilities.
