What to do as an aspiring engineer with no experience or knowledge????

Hello. I am a 17-year-old in Laredo, and I hope to major in a branch of engineering in the future. Despite not having experience, would it be best to seek out internships to gain experience? If so, what are my options in Laredo or online? I've tried looking but I'm struggling with it as most jobs are looking for college undergraduates/graduates.

My dad is a mechanic, so would it be a good start to work with him? If so, how should I prepare? My dad is a busy man and is less interested in taking the time to show me the ropes. What online resources would be a good start to understanding what it's like to work as a mechanic/auto diagnostics so that I can be less of a hindrance and more of a valuable asset?

Thank you!

Hi! I think online resources like LinkedIn or even twitter would help. Also, shadowing would be super helpful in my opinion. You can learn a lot by just standing there and paying attention.

Hi Karla,
I think, as an aspiring engineer with no experience or knowledge, there are several steps you can take to embark on your engineering journey. Begin by conducting thorough research to gain a basic understanding of the different branches of engineering and their respective fields of application. Explore online resources, books, and videos that provide introductory knowledge about engineering concepts. Consider pursuing a formal education in engineering by enrolling in a relevant degree program at a college or university. This will provide you with a comprehensive foundation of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. In addition to academic studies, seek out internships, apprenticeships, or entry-level positions in engineering firms or research institutions. These opportunities can provide valuable hands-on experience and exposure to real-world engineering projects. Engage with professional engineering organizations and attend industry events to network with experienced engineers and stay updated on the latest trends and advancements. Lastly, cultivate a strong work ethic, problem-solving mindset, and a passion for learning. Building a solid foundation of knowledge and skills, coupled with practical experience and a drive for continuous improvement, will set you on the path to becoming a successful engineer.
Thank you comment icon Oh wow!! I'll definitely be on the lookout for industry events near me then!! I honestly hadn't considered that and I think it's a really cool idea because I wanted to do a research project thing but the more I think about it the more intimidating it becomes because of microwaves and hydrogen storage (and I don't know anything)!! Maybe I could find out about something more reasonable for me to do or maybe even something to do with my current idea, since I want to research something significant despite my current knowledge state. Once again, thank you so much!! Karla

Hi Karla,

It's awesome that you're interested in Engineering! Have you thought about a specific area yet? I began with chemical engineering but later switched to industrial and systems engineering because I liked tackling bigger issues. Internships and shadowing are excellent ways to explore. You can also find free online courses, like the ones offered by Stanford (https://online.stanford.edu/free-courses). I found some internships in Laredo on Indeed, which you should check out. Medline, Dell, and Transplace currently have summer internships available.

To learn more about cars before shadowing your dad, watch YouTube videos. There are tons of helpful videos that explain how to diagnose and fix various car brands. If you can't get an internship this summer, consider a summer job at a local auto shop. Many places hire during the summer, including retailers like AutoZone.
Thank you comment icon Hi!! I'm thinking about going into mechatronics engineering or chemistry and I hope to research alternative energy!! Systems engineering is also beginning to pique my interest! I'll definitely check out the Stanford course ASAP as well as the internships you mentioned. Thank you so much for all the specific recommendations and the time and effort!! Genuinely is super helpful and means a lot to me!! Karla
Thank you comment icon You are so welcome, and I wish you all the best in the future! Alternative energy research is such a great topic and will need someone who enjoys a multiple-disciplined approach. Systems engineering is so much fun due to the practicality of it. You get a chance to work with so many people from different areas and get a chance to learn from them as well as help them optimize their processes and solve complex problems. Michael Farrell

Hey there! It's amazing to hear about your aspirations to become an engineer, even if you're starting without experience or knowledge. Don't worry, there are plenty of steps you can take to kickstart your journey:

- Gain Experience: Internships are indeed a great way to gain hands-on experience in the field of engineering. While it may be challenging to find opportunities specifically in Laredo, consider looking for remote or online internships. Many companies offer virtual internships or projects that you can participate in from anywhere. Websites like Internshala, LinkedIn, and Indeed can be helpful in finding such opportunities.

- Utilize Your Dad's Expertise: Working with your dad as a mechanic is a fantastic start! While he may be busy, make the most of the time you do have together. Observe, ask questions, and actively participate in his work when possible. By doing so, you'll gain practical skills and insights that will be valuable for your engineering career.

- Online Resources: To enhance your understanding of mechanics and auto diagnostics, explore online resources that offer valuable insights and practical knowledge. Websites like Khan Academy, Coursera, and YouTube have tutorials, courses, and videos on various engineering topics. Look for resources specifically tailored to mechanics and auto diagnostics, and gradually build your expertise at your own pace.

Remember, your journey as an aspiring engineer is just beginning, and it's perfectly normal to start with little experience. Stay motivated, embrace every learning opportunity that comes your way, and continue to seek knowledge. With dedication, perseverance, and a growth mindset, you'll gradually become a valuable asset in the field of engineering. You've got this!
Thank you comment icon Thank you so so much for the effort and time in the response!! It genuinely means so much to me!! I'll definitely look into everything you've mentioned :) Karla
