Howard’s Answer

Check with your local county health department. They should offer classes and or a website. You should be able to take the class online and the exam. Each state and county can be a little different.
You can also go to the National Restaurant Association website and do ServeSafe. It is more expensive. But it is valid in most states and is good for three years. If you are going to go out of state to school this can be a better option. https://www.servsafe.com/access/ss/catalog/productlist/55
You can do online classes, in-person classes and take the test online if your school does not offer it.
I hope this helps

Hello Diego,

How to Obtain a Food Handling Permit in California

In California, obtaining a food handling permit is a crucial requirement for individuals working in the food industry, including restaurants like Subway. Here is a step-by-step guide on how and where you can obtain a food handling permit in California:

1. Complete a Food Safety Certification Course: To obtain a food handling permit in California, you must first complete a state-approved food safety certification course. This course provides essential training on proper food handling practices, sanitation, and safety measures to prevent foodborne illnesses.

2. Pass the Food Safety Exam: After completing the food safety certification course, you will need to pass an exam to demonstrate your understanding of safe food handling practices. The exam typically covers topics such as personal hygiene, cross-contamination, temperature control, and cleaning procedures.

3. Apply for the Food Handler Card: Once you have successfully completed the certification course and passed the exam, you can apply for a Food Handler Card from your local health department or an approved training provider. The card serves as official documentation that you have met the requirements to handle food safely in California.

4. Renew Your Food Handler Card: Food Handler Cards in California are typically valid for two to three years, after which they must be renewed by retaking the certification course and passing the exam again. It is essential to keep your Food Handler Card up to date to comply with state regulations.

Where to Obtain a Food Handling Permit in California: You can obtain a food handling permit in California through various approved training providers and online platforms that offer state-accredited certification courses. Additionally, local health departments in different counties across California also provide information on approved training programs and how to obtain a Food Handler Card.

By following these steps and obtaining a Food Handler Card, you will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to handle food safely and responsibly in compliance with California’s food safety regulations.

Top 3 Authoritative Sources Used:

Their website provides detailed information on food safety regulations, certification requirements, and approved training providers for obtaining a Food Handler Card.

They offer accredited courses and exams that meet California’s requirements for obtaining a Food Handler Card. ServSafe’s resources are widely used by individuals seeking certification in safe food handling practices.
