The best advice I can give you is first to make sure you know that nothing is more common than talented, under-paid and under-appreciated architects. Architecture just isn't a lucrative profession. Ask any 10 architects and they will give you the same answer because IT IS TRUE. With that aside, in my opinion if you are determined to become an architect, and if financial security is important to you, I advise you to become an architect/developer and after acquiring at least five or so years' experience in architecture and construction, take an equity position in your projects. You can start by investing your fees to participate in the ownership of a speculative project, i.e. a house or small commercial building developed specifically for re-sale. Do a few of those, build up your experience and reputation and gradually increase the size of your projects and your investment. If you become successful as both an architect and a developer funding for your projects will come easily because banks will want to lend you money, and friend/family/investors will want to become financial partners because EVERYONE WANTS TO MAKE MONEY. Hope that helps-just my $.02.
