Becoming an architect may not be an immediate college achievement, but it's definitely a rewarding journey that college can set you up for. The path to architecture is paved with degrees, either a Bachelor's or a Master's in Architecture. Even if you start from a different discipline, an additional one or two years of study can lead you to a Master's degree in Architecture.
During your academic journey, you'll discover a fresh perspective of the world. You'll have the opportunity to design and bring your own projects to life. Core curriculum courses like Math, English, and History will be part of your studies. This enriching journey typically spans five years.
After your academic journey, you'll step into the real world, apprenticing in an architectural firm. Here, you'll gain hands-on experience and learn the various facets of the architectural business. A minimum of three years in this environment will prepare you for the next big step - the Architect Registration Examination (ARE).
The ARE, which I took in nine sections but has since been reduced to six, is a challenging yet conquerable hurdle. You'll spend your apprenticeship preparing for this exam, which currently has a first-time pass rate of 58%. But don't worry if you don't ace it on your first try. You can retake the sections you didn't pass without having to redo the ones you did.
Once you've passed, voila! You're officially a registered architect! You can then choose to continue working for your firm or venture out and start your own practice.
