I'm applying to University of Manitoba in Canada into the Faculty of Science and I'm from Nigeria so one of the admission requirements is that I need an equivalent minimum average of B3 (80%) over the four courses needed with no less than C6(60%) in each course. The problem is how do I calculate my average because I'm a bit confused, to make sure I'm eligible and I meet the requirements before applying?

I'm a high school graduate.

Hi Deborah,

All the best with your application process.

The previous advisors are correct, you can reach out to the schools directly to ask for their preferred process or a pre-evaluation if possible.

STEP#1: Contact your school directly. Your school may have a process to do a pre-evaluation for you.

STEP#2: You can also pay to have your transcript(s) evaluated through an agency recognized by most institutions in Canada or at least by the one you are interested in.

STEP#3: FIND an agency: In the US, our international students use WES, ECE or accredited agencies to evaluate their work, calculate a GPA and do course-by-course or degree-to-degree equivalency for their applications courses in US. Again, they only do this if the schools they want to go to do not have a pre-evaluation or international evaluation process for your country of origin.

STEP #4. How the pre-evaluation works. For example, if a student is coming from the UK or Belize to the US, they would contact the evaluation agency first to see how they prefer to receive their transcripts, test scores (I.e, GCSEs, O-or A-Level exams, etc.), and other documents. Then, the student would contact their college or HS to send their transcripts to that agency. Then, the agency will evaluate your records, and based on the types of evaluation selected(you can ask for different types as needed and mentioned earlier), the agency will evaluate your academic records. Then, the agency can send their evaluation of your work to the corresponding college(s) on your list for you.

So, if you think these are viable options for you, please contact your school in Canada directly and ask them about the agency they prefer you use, and you can start that process asap.

I hope this helps!

This can be complicated between countries and sometimes even between schools, not everywhere has the same grading system. I found a variety online for Nigeria that match the letter grade to a percentage: https://www.scholaro.com/db/Countries/Nigeria/Grading-System. It's mostly college, but the general idea might help explain what they mean? The University of Manitoba is saying they want you to have all 80% grades, or a 90% grade and a 70% grade that combine to a 80% grade (or better). Because this doesn't look simple though (especially if an A could mean anywhere from 70-100%), I also think you should reach out to the university and ask, they should be able to help you!

Hi there have you reached out to the university's application support team or your school's admin staff? They might be able to help. There are online resources too like this one: https://www.scholaro.com/gpa-calculator/, I am just not sure how reliable they are. All the best with your applications! Please consider applying to more than one university if you are able to to maximize your chances of admission.
