I keep hearing over and over that it is important in one's profession to have "AI skills". I understand how AI is going to change the work force in the future, but what particular AI skills are important to have?

So far I am a SME with AI computer hardware, networking and infrastructure. I have built an agent at home, used few shot tuning on a generic LLM, and did a resume builder and mock interview on it. I have a small prompt library that I keep at work and at home, slowly expanding to making skills and eventually larger tools. Is this enough to say "I have AI skills"? Is this going to become the same thing as saying "I have MS office and internet skills" in the future? Should I be focused on training, prompting, building, RAG, embeddings, ethics, coding, APIs, genAI, model tuning, agentic workflows, and certifications before I say I have AI skills? Basically which skills are desired or required in the future?

What skills or technologies should I prioritize learning outside of the standard coursework that helps me stand out and be a high value candidate?

With the rise of AI there is a lot of fear mongering occurring in our world where many people are fearful they may not have a job in the next couple of years. However, after speaking to many professionals many say that AI is rather like a tool useful to be more efficient in their everyday work. With that, skills like excel that used to stand out within candidates are now being taken over by AI. This means the skills that allow candidates to stand are different now, and I would like to know what that is. I am currently a freshman in college. I am an accounting major with a minor in psychology and I would love to know what are your thoughts on AI, and how you think technology will continue to grow and expand, and how that will affect our careers.

As I am a mechatronics engineering student, which career would be apt for me?

I am currently in my final year of undergrad college. I always had immense interest in robotics, physics, mechanics and computers. But now, I seem to be far behind than my peers regarding skills and projects. Only my degree will act as a credible experience in mechatronics. I need some advice on how to reset or move forward in the mentioned domains, so that I can acquire and hone my skills, and land on a career. (This question might be vague, but I'm honestly clueless on what to do)

What are the most impactful innovations in Computer Science for 2026, and which career paths best align with them?

As we move through 2026, the field of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is shifting from experimental phases to "hyper-adoption" across several breakthrough areas. I am interested in understanding which specific recent innovations are currently redefining the industry and what professional roles are emerging as a result. Specifically, I would like to know: Which recent innovations (e.g., in AI, Quantum, or Edge Computing) are considered the most "game-changing" for 2026? What specific career paths should students or professionals target to stay ahead of these trends? What foundational skills are now "non-negotiable" for these new roles?

Pivoting from IT Generalist to Specialized Expert

I’ve been in IT for nearly a decade, primarily working in support and analyst roles. I’ve built experience across several areas such as basic automation, basic software development, basic networking, and basic cybersecurity. What I mean by basic is I took classes in my local community classes. While this has made me a strong generalist, I’m now looking to take my career to the next level by specializing in a specific discipline or industry. I’d like to transition from being a “jack of all trades” to becoming deeply skilled in one area. For those who have gone through a similar pivot, how did you identify the right specialization, and what steps did you take to test the waters before committing?

What operational tools and automation techniques can help a small online business scale efficiently without significantly increasing overhead?

I am specifically looking for practical recommendations for a small online business (e-commerce, digital services, or similar). I would like insights on: Which operational tools (project management, accounting, etc.) are most effective for small startups. Automation techniques that save time, reduce errors, and improve efficiency without adding significant costs. How to prioritize tools or automation strategies depending on business size or growth stage. Examples of tools that are cost-effective, scalable, and widely trusted by startups. I am looking for actionable advice rather than general suggestions, ideally with examples from real small businesses or case studies.

Should I get a laptop for Engineering-Related programs? If so, which one should I aim for?

I am planning on going to Oakland University for Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering. What kind of laptop should I purchase for CAD/Automation related programs? I’m on the fence between a MacBook (I don’t think it’s a great idea, since SolidWorks is Windows oriented) and a Lenovo ThinkPad (they’re really expensive) I have a very strong PC at home, but I am wondering if I should get a laptop I can use in class. If there are other suggestions around $2k, it would be much appreciated!

What careers would be possible with a Mechatronics degree vs Mechanical Drafting degree through a trade school.?

I am considering two different paths after graduating from high school. One would be a traditional college route with a four year degree in Mechatronics. The other would be a nearby trade school that offers an Associate degree in Drafting/Design and provides job placement assistance. For the past few years I have been on my school's robotics team and really enjoy designing the robot in CAD then 3-D printing all the parts to build it. I think both pathways lead to a similar career, but one is quicker and a fraction of the cost. Am I correct in this?

What careers are becoming less relevant because of AI?

And if your own field is shifting, how are you adapting? We are watching AI slowly reshaping industries, automating routine jobs, transforming how we work, and challenging long-held career paths. But that leads to a bigger question... What career paths should the next generation focus on if they want to stay relevant in the next 10–30 years?

What to do when you're entering an engineering class with no previous interest/knowledge?

I recently enrolled in a college for Automation Engineering. I thought it seemed like a cool and hands-on type of class, but never in my life have I had any association with engineering. It was never a hobby of mine, I never took any after-school classes for it, and I have never done any prior research about it. I am now regretting my decision for picking this field of study, because I barely know anything about it! It simple to watch a couple videos or research articles online about engineering, but I wish I had some previous experience. I guess my question is; have you ever gone into a major blindly? Specifically engineering. How do you combat feelings of doubt, and is it difficult to be in an engineering class if you previously had no interest or knowledge in it? #Spring25

With the growth of AI, would job availability and salary potentially change for those just entering positions working as a software developer?

I recognize that AI could potentially take over many jobs, especially in the field of information technology, because it could possibly do the same thing faster, better, and cheaper. I was wondering if there is a high possibility for AI to make it so there are fewer positions and/or lower salaries for those working as software developers, as their work becomes less and less desired.
